The
Duncan Stingrays’ top two swimmers are back into high-level
competition this weekend, less than two weeks after returning from
the Western Canadian championships in Regina.
Veronica Reid and Tamara Garriock,
both 14, will be looking for more outstanding results from the
Vancouver Island regional meet at Saanich Commonwealth
Place.
At
Regina, Reid swam in five events during the mammoth four-day
competition against much older swimmers.
She
swam her signature event, the 50-metre breaststroke, the first day
and tied for 15th that put her into the B final. Reid placed 16th
overall following the finals two days later.
Her
other swims included: the 50 fly where she achieved a best time,
the 100 breast, 200 breast and 50 free. All were open age
groups.
“I
thought I did pretty good,’’ said Reid of her
performance.
Garriock made the finals of the 200
and 400 I.M. and also entered the 200 back, 100 free, 200 free and
400 free.
She
placed fourth in the C final of the 200 I.M. but couldn’t do the
400 I.M. final because it was scheduled after her departure time
from Regina.
“There
was like 60 to 80 people in each event,’’ Garriock said. “I was
like right on best times.’’
She
isn’t bothered by facing older swimmers any longer. “I’m starting
to get as fast as them.’’
